Literally, “great beast”

Megatherium was the largest of the ground sloths, and although apparently very awkward and slow-witted, his great size and strength protected him from the large meat-eaters of his time. He lived during the Pleistocene epoch which began 1 million years ago.

Armaments manufacturer Alfred Krupp who allegedly used slave labor to make weapons for the Nazis, contacted the famous Arnold Newman for a portrait in 1963.

Upon finding out that Newman was a Jew, Krupp refused to let him take the photograph. Newman insisted to have Krupp look at his portfolio before making a final decision and after seeing Newman’s portfolio Krupp accepted.

On July 6, 1963, they went into a factory in Essen which belonged to Krupp, where Newman decided to make Krupp look as evil as possible under the eerie demonic lighting of the factory.

When Krupp first saw the portrait he was livid. Newman was more tongue-in-cheek: “As a Jew, it’s my own little moment of revenge.”

The documentary “Citizen Koch” had two high-profile screenings at the Wisconsin Film Festival in April. But it likely won’t be coming to a public television station near you.

On the day after those screenings, the filmmakers found out that their public television backers were pulling the funding, possibly to placate billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch.

Wisconsin has a history of being among the nation’s leaders in voting rates for presidential elections, and 2012 continued that trend. With 73.6 percent of eligible voters casting a ballot in November 2012, Wisconsin ranked third in the country, trailing only the District of Columbia and Mississippi. Wisconsin was also third in that ranking in 2008. It was second in 2004, third in 2009 and sixth in 1996. Breaking it down by age, Wisconsin had the highest voting rate in the 65-to-74 age group (86.3 percent) and is in the top four for all of the younger ranges. Use the graphic below to see the voting rates for states according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey. You can filter the views using the dropdown menus.

Thank goodness Scott Walker is planning to do something about this excellent voter turnout…

The Gobbler Restaurant & Motel in Johnson Creek, Wisconsin was designed by architect Helmut Ajango for local poultry processor Clarence Hartwig and opened in 1967. The menu featured turkey, prime rib and steak. A rotating circular bar that completed one revolution every 80 minutes was a signature centerpiece of the building.

in later years, the business struggled and Clyde Hartwig closed operations by 1995. After the Hartwig family sold the property and several restaurants were opened but ultimately failed because the owners had no experience as restaurateurs.

The legendary supper club remains, but the motel was burned (because of structural wood rot) as a fire department training exercise in 2001. The last tenant went out of business in mid-2002. In 2011, the locally produced film “Missed Connections” was shot on location at the restaurant.

The property is currently listed for a $2.3 million.
